Zombie themed games will never fail to amaze an audience. And when it comes to free zombie game titles, Glu Mobile has got it all made. Joining the long list of post-apocalyptic games in the Google Play Store is Gears and Guts, which can easily be describe in three words “zombie road rage”.
Zombie Road Rage
Gears and Guts for Android is another freemium title by Glu Mobile that lets players take control of a car and wreak havoc through the city filled with zombies. Speaking of car, Gears and Guts kind of reminds me of Mutant Roadkill that was released by the same company, and involves driving a car and escaping a wasteland full of zombies.
The objective of Gears & Guts is simple, and that is you need to get rid of hordes of zombies in the city while keeping your car alive. In order to succeed you need to rely on your vehicle, by buying weapon upgrades that you scavenge throughout the game. As you progress in later parts of the mission you will gain access to powerful weapons, resistant damage cars, as well as upgraded bumpers, hoods, and weapons to beef up your arsenal. And just like every other Glu games, there is the presence of in-app purchases for players to speed up their weapon upgrades. Glu Credits are used to purchase superior weapons but you can still beat the game without having to spend anything.
Shopping for Upgrades
The only thing you need is more time, and by that you need to continuously grind to pay off those fancy upgrades. Given the fact that most of the powerful weapons and cars can only be achieved by purchasing Glu credits, it seems that it is almost impossible to beat the game without purchasing them. Like I said, if you just have the time, and skill you can still beat the game. The other currency that doesn’t involve purchasing Glu Credits, revolves around accumulating “Bolts” in which you can spend it on upgrades during after each mission.
Missions vary and most of the time it involves you killing with a number of zombies to finish the level. At some parts, you are required to kill specific zombies, collect packages, fight mini-bosses, or fend off a zombie attack. As of now, Gears & Guts has a total of six chapters, with 4 levels each with makes a grand total of 24 epic zombie driving survival levels to keep you entertained.
Twisted Metal and Zombies
Gears & Guts reminds me of an old classic game called Twisted Metal. Well for most parts of the game it does involve you riding around with a car and upgrading it with weapons. As for as gameplay is concern, the game is set in isometric 3D which you can find in many games such as Gun Bros or Samurai II: Vengance, except it only deals with cars and a huge map that you can explore. You can either use the traditional way of driving using touch or go realistic by using tilt controls. Speaking of controls, moving your car using the touch controls scheme is pretty solid, and not to mention you can do tight turns and drifts with ease.
If you’re planning on downloading the game, we recommend that you play on a medium or high-end device, as Gears & Guts requires a decent processor, GPU and needs 360 MB of free space. We’ve already tested the game running on a Galaxy Note, and still we can experience a few stutters, and frame rate drops all over the place. Despite the lags and predicaments, we still love the game and its beautiful rendered sceneries and backgrounds.
Graphic wise, we never had problems with the game as it is absolutely amazing. Blood and guts spill over the place and not to mention the tiniest of details that can be found on the zombies. Even better is the sound that continuously pumps-up our adrenaline during each levels.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, Gears & Guts is a marriage of Twisted Metal and zombies. With eye-candy graphics, and fast paced action that involves zombies and cars, Glu Mobile has definitely made another freemium game that is worth the keeps. If only they can fix the random lags and stutter, then this game could already be another masterpiece.
